Fantasy Football Trade Vetoes

Q: In our league, we are having problems getting trades to pass the veto vote. No one seems to agree on how to determine if a trade is \”fair\”. Points, avgs., Pos. rank are easy to determine but how do you weigh potential or upcoming schedule. Most recent veto is P Manning for K Warner and Calvin Johnson. Is this a fair trade?

A: We only recommend trades under two circumstances:

1.   The trade is an example of collusion
2.   The trade is extremely unfair – to the point that it is virtually impossible for one of the teams involved to argue that they are benefiting from the deal

Please note that we said ‘unfair’, not ‘uneven’.   In theory, all trades are somewhat ‘uneven’ as the value exchanged is almost never completely equal.    For example, Drew Brees and Tom Brady have almost identical statlines this season.   However, Brady has four more fantasy points than Brees.   Technically this trade is uneven.   Does that mean such a trade should be vetoed?  Of course not.   Because the fantasy points put up by Brady and Brees are comparable and it is reasonable to believe that either side of the trade could benefit depending on how the rest of the season plays out.

It is hard to quantify a trade because you have no insight into the future.    Looking at points and position rank is helpful, but it doesn’t say anything about how the traded players perform after the trade.   Is Randy Moss for Mike Sims-Walker a trade that should be vetoed?  You could argue that it is.    But it is also completely reasonable to think that Sims-Walker will outscore Moss throughout the rest of the season.

The point is, we recommend that you use your veto powers sparingly.   You have to let your owners manage their rosters.    We typically use position rankings and average points per game (to account for bye weeks) in our trade evaluations.   You are essentially trying to proove that one of the teams involved in a trade is not trying to improve their team.   If there is a chance (even a small one) that they gain an advantage from the trade, then it should be allowed to pass.

Based on this logic we would not veto the trade mentioned below (Manning for Warner/Johnson).    Moving from Manning (3rd ranked QB) to Warner (12th ranked QB) is definitely a downgrade.   But that team is picking up Calvin Johnson and though he is currently the 48th ranked WR he’s been injured and has the potential to be a dominant player down the stretch.   Is it reasonable to believe that the value added by Johnson at WR will more than offset the expected loss of value after the QB downgrade?   We think so.

One last point.   We would rather be on the Manning side of the trade.   But just because we favor one side of the trade over another doesn’t mean it should be vetoed.   Your opinion is subjective and should not be the basis of a veto decision.   Look at the facts, assess the value being exchanged in the trade and only veto as a last resort.

Matthew Berry’s Week 5 Fantasy Sits

ESPN’s Matthew Berry is recommending Carson Palmer, Steve Slaton, Ronnie Brown, Thomas Jones and Julius Jones as sits this week.   Stay tuned to see how those recommendations pan out.

UPDATE:   Using a standard ESPN league as a benchmark (starting 1QB, 2RB, 2WR) we graded Berry on whether or not these recommended sits finished in the top 12 for QBs and 24 for RBs/WRs in week 5.    The “Talented Mr. Roto” went 3-2 last week.   These are relatively aggressive recommendations so we commend Berry on that, however, if you sat either Brown or T.Jones on Monday night you most likely want to smash his bound hand with a mallet a la Leonardo DiCaprio in Body of Lies.

Stallworth Suspended by NFL

Donte Stallworth, who recently pleaded guilty to DUI Manslaughter, has been officially, and indefinitely,  suspended by the NFL as a result of the tragic March 14 incident in which the Brown’s wide receiver struck and killed 59 year old Mario Reyes.

Stallworth has made a career out of underperformance, so from a fantasy perspective, the impact is negligible.    A small opportunity has been created behind Browns starters Braylon Edwards and Joshua Cribbs for either veteran WR David Patten or the emergence of one of the two rookie WRs drafted by Cleveland this offseason:  Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi.

Kyle Orton’s Fantasy Football Potential

Now that Kyle Orton has been named the starting quarterback in Denver (over fellow offseason acquisition Chris Simms), fantasy football owners must pay close attention.    Here is an interesting article on the Kyle Orton’s fantasy potential in 2009 posted over at Screaming Sports.

Keep in mind that the article does hint at Brandon Marshall’s propensity to stay in Denver.    That decision will obviously have a significant effect on Orton’s outlook this season.    Rumors continue to fly on Marshall’s fate, but concerns are legitimate that “The Beast” has played his last day as a Denver Bronco according to the Brandon Marshall blog.

That said, the consensus is that though Orton lacks the big play potential of Cutler, he will fit well into a good system with a solid supporting cast.

Bill Williamson over at ESPN had similar thoughts on Orton’s chance this season.

Burress Court Date Pushed Back to September

Plaxico Burress’ court case was postponed this morning to reconvene on September 23rd.    The extension improves the chances of Burress playing ball in this upcoming season and is welcomed news to Burress fantasy football owners.

The possibility still exists that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will take disciplinary action against Burress.   The list of teams who have expressed interest in Plaxico’s services this season include the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears.

Brandon Marshall Misses Mandatory Minicamp

Just months after the Broncos dumped star quarterback Jay Cutler, rumors abound that wide receiver Brandon Marshall will be the next offseason purge in Denver.

The Denver Post reported that Marshall missed the mandatory minicamp on Friday due to concerns about his contract.    Marshall also has concerns about the quality of the Broncos’ medical care while rehabbing from a hip injury, but these concerns are secondary to his contract which paid him a modest  $2.198MM in 2009, with incentives.
